2009 Spirit of Women Regional and National Award Winners Announced!

Each year since 1998, the Spirit of Women Hospital Network has recognized women across the United States for outstanding service in their communities. Celebrating the Spirit of Women, these awards honor the talent and dedication of people who act to make their communities healthier, safer, and more inspirational places to live.

Spirit of Women is proud to announce our three National Spirit of Women Awards Winners:
Spirit of Women is proud to Honor Rachel Mashni of Mercy Hospital Anderson as the 2009 National Young Person Role Model Award Winner. Rachel has logged over 90 hours at the Anderson Inpatient Unit of Hospice of Cincinnati visiting with ailing patients and families since November of 2007. As she prepares to become a physician and practice missionary work in third world countries, Rachel is involved in her high school's Diversity Club and National Honor Society, serves as President of the school Book Club, and also takes a full course load of advanced classes. Rachel is an inspiration to us all.

Spirit of Women would also like to extend an honorable mention to the following Regional Winners:
Sofia Papastamelos -- AtlantiCare Women's Health & Wellness
Julianne Dominelli -- Christiana Care
Lana Marie Craft -- Forrest General Hospital
Emily Scheffler -- Gerber Memorial Hospital
Katie Aiello -- Memorial Hospital of South Bend
Ashley Pruitt -- North Mississippi Medical Center
Mausam Chokshi -- Parrish Medical Center
Kelsey Krueger -- St. Cloud Hospital

Spirit of Women's 2009 National Awards Winner in the Community Hero in Action category is Beverly Crossen of North Mississippi Medical Center. Beverly has spearheaded training for CPR and the use of automatic external defibrillators, or AEDs, all across her community. She has also already raised money to equip local schools, parks, churches, and even police offices with automatic external defibrillators, or AEDs. Beverly's relentless efforts are sure to save lives, and nothing more important could be said about a hero.

Spirit of Women would also like to extend an honorable mention to the following Regional Winners:
Cindy Dietrich -- AtlantiCare Women's Health & Wellness
Anna Marie Farro -- Christiana Care
Kym Garraway -- Forrest General Hospital
Rita Van Boven -- Gerber Memorial Hospital
Joni Flynn -- Memorial Hospital of South Bend
Carol Pittman -- Mercy Hospital Anderson
Janet Clark Rooks -- Parrish Medical Center
Sandy Schulzetenberg -- St. Cloud Hospital

Dani Jakubowski of St. Cloud Hospital has been recognized as the 2009 Spirit of Women National Awards Winner in the Healthcare Hero category. Dani has spent 20 years as a psychologist in the St. Cloud Counseling Center, helping patients deal with many different conditions including depression, anxiety, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Dani spends much of her time speaking publically, presenting at seminars, and raising grant funds to support her cause, because it is estimated that between 20-25% of all women have been abused at some point in their lives. Dani adds light to this world by always carrying the message of hope.

Spirit of Women would also like to extend an honorable mention to the following Regional Winners:
Sister Mary Francis Kyle -- AtlantiCare Women's Health & Wellness
Lavaida Owens White -- Christiana Care

The 11th Annual Red Shoe and Tie National Awards Ball were held on Friday, July 10, 2009 in Washington, DC during Spirit of Women's National Executive Conference. More than 200 healthcare executives were in attendance to honor and celebrate these winners and the tremendous work that each of them has contributed.

Beverly Crossen, our National Community Hero in Action, unfortunately could not be in attendance for the ceremony, though she was attending "in Spirit". National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institutes of Health announce the 2010 Healthy Vision Community Awards Program

NEI is pleased to announce that applications for the 2010 Healthy Vision Community Awards (HVCA) program will be available June 29, 2009. This program provides funding up to $10,000 for the implementation of eye health education and promotion activities to reduce health disparities and improve quality of life. The focus of each program must be eye health education. The 2010 HVCA funds are not intended for research projects or to provide direct medical care.

Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply, including community-based organizations and agencies, minority-based organizations, schools, faith-based organizations, civic and fraternal groups, community clinics, local Agencies on Aging, and state and local health departments and agencies. Universities and university affiliations, such as medical centers and schools of optometry and ophthalmology, are precluded from receiving an award directly, but are welcome to collaborate with eligible groups, such as community-based organizations. The final selection of award recipients will be based on a combination of the evaluation score, geographic and racial/ethnic representation, and project innovation. All applications must be postmarked by Monday, August 31, 2009. Awards will be announced in March 2010.

Application forms and program information are available at www.healthyvision2010.org/news/hvca. If you have questions about the application package or eligibility requirements, please e-mail your questions or requests to HVCAmail@shs.net.
